Internal Mic Test: 2019 MacBook Pro (16-inch) surrounded by Nuggets

Testing the internal microphone on the 2019 MacBook Pro (16-inch) (this one / affiliate link) with and without a partial Nugget surround.

Where is the microphone in the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro? It’s here: In this mesh grille to the left of the MacBook Pro keyboard. (the speakers are not in the grilles – the speakers fire downward through slots underneath)

The Nugget is foam furniture made for kids to crawl around on. Not sponsored, and no affiliation whatsoever.

Yes, there’s a Shure Beta 58A microphone in the pics. However, that’s only for the Instagram post and for the voice-over I’m about to record. But this recording is done with the internal microphone to the left of the keyboard.

Unthinkable.

The Tests

NO EDITING.

Here are both recordings in Audition before splitting them into the 2 files you see below.

A: No Nuggets

Here, the MacBook is sitting directly on my Holey Desk, which is in the corner of the room.

This is the raw WAV file straight from Adobe Audition with zero processing. There are a few peaks above 0db that don’t seem to cause clipping – I’m not super familiar with audio peak clipping, but maybe since it’s a WAV file it’s fine? If you hear clipping, let me know and I’ll add a hard limiter, but I wanted to keep this as raw as possible.

This is not sponsored by NuggetComfort (no affiliations whatsoever) but if you want to know more about them, check out their website at NuggetComfort.com.

What now? Check out my Holey Desk that’s buried under the Nuggets!
